Room design
Auditorium Speech Clarity: What to Review
By Thermofriz Team · Updated 25 October 2026
Review auditorium speech clarity by examining background noise, reflection paths, reverberation, seating, room use and coordination with the sound-system design.
Start with the intended programme
A hall used for lectures, amplified presentations and mixed performances may need different acoustic priorities from a room dedicated to one use. Record seating, stage arrangement and occupied conditions. Ask where listeners report difficulty and whether the problem changes with microphone or loudspeaker use. These observations help the project specialists distinguish room behaviour from audio-system and operational issues.
Investigate noise and reflection separately
Intrusive HVAC or outside noise can mask speech even when the hall’s decay is controlled. A strong rear-wall reflection can be a specific problem rather than simply an excessive overall reverberation time. Review relevant measurements and room geometry with the acoustic specialist. Treatment should address the observed mechanism; the same quantity of absorptive material in a different position may not produce the same result.
Define acceptance with the complete team
Coordinate the acoustic surfaces with the sound-system designer, architect and services team. Identify operating conditions, measurement locations and the verification method before installation. Where seating or use changes, review the design assumptions. Thermofriz can discuss auditorium materials and substantial contracting scopes, with the evidence and interfaces needed for a practical proposal. The completion record should distinguish visual approval from measured acoustic acceptance.
Project checklist
- Programme, stage and seating defined
- Reported difficulty mapped by position
- Background noise and echoes assessed
- Sound-system and treatment design coordinated
- Acceptance conditions and responsibilities agreed
