Planning an Acoustic Site Survey

By Thermofriz Team · Updated 25 October 2026

Plan an acoustic site survey around representative conditions, source identification, room construction, access and the decisions the assessment must support.

Visit when the problem can be observed

Arrange access during representative activities and equipment operation. A quiet, empty room may not reproduce a complaint that occurs during teaching, production or a busy call period. Record room use, occupancy, services operation and any doors or windows left open. Ask users to identify repeatable examples without assuming that their description identifies the technical cause. Their experience is an important starting point for the assessment.

Look at sources, paths and receiving spaces

Map where sound originates, how it may travel and where it causes difficulty. Include obvious openings and concealed routes that can reasonably be inspected. Room surfaces, doors, glazing, ceiling voids and services all deserve consideration. State where construction cannot be confirmed without opening up. Photographs, dimensions and marked drawings should distinguish observed facts from assumptions or proposed further investigation.

Connect the survey to a decision

Agree whether the survey supports a diagnosis, a preliminary budget, a detailed design or verification of an installed system. These are different tasks. Specify any required measurements, instruments and operating conditions with the acoustic specialist. The resulting record should explain what can be concluded and what cannot. Thermofriz can review a survey-based brief for suitable materials and contracting, including the interfaces that need coordination before installation.

Project checklist

  • Representative activities and services arranged
  • Access and safety constraints agreed
  • Source and receiving locations marked
  • Concealed construction limitations recorded
  • Purpose and deliverables of the survey defined
