Background Noise Surveys for Acoustic Project Briefs

By Thermofriz Team · Updated 25 October 2026

Define background noise survey conditions, source identification, room use and reporting before acoustic design decisions.

Define the question before measuring

A complaint about air-conditioning noise differs from a question about traffic intrusion or speech privacy. State the room use, source concern and decisions the survey must support. Agree representative operating periods rather than choosing a convenient quiet moment. Ask the responsible professional which measurement method and criteria are appropriate to the project.

Record conditions that explain the result

Document occupied or unoccupied state, open or closed doors, ventilation settings and nearby activity. Identify the instrument and calibration checks in the report. A single number without this context can be difficult to reproduce or interpret. Frequency information and source observations may be needed where the proposed solution depends on the character of the noise.

Turn findings into a scoped response

Separate dominant equipment sources, external ingress and room effects. Absorption may help room comfort while leaving the source largely unchanged. Coordinate any equipment or building-envelope work with the relevant specialists. Keep the baseline report so that the completed intervention can be assessed using comparable conditions, with changes in operation clearly recorded.

Project checklist

  • Purpose and representative period
  • Locations and room operating state
  • Instrumentation and calibration record
  • Source observations and relevant metrics
  • Comparable post-work assessment
