Acoustic Ceiling Baffles or Clouds: How to Compare
By Thermofriz Team · Updated 25 October 2026
Compare acoustic baffles and ceiling clouds by available area, suspension, acoustic data, lighting and maintenance access.
Start with the room and ceiling constraints
Baffles hang as vertical elements while clouds generally present a horizontal face below the structure. Both can suit exposed-ceiling designs, but their layouts use the space differently. Record ceiling height, clearances and the areas available between services. The preferred visual arrangement must also be feasible for safe support and normal building use.
Compare appropriate acoustic data
Discrete absorbers may be reported differently from a continuous ceiling. Check the units, spacing and mounting conditions in the supplier’s report before comparing quantities. Multiplying a room area by an unrelated absorption coefficient can give a misleading estimate. Ask the acoustic designer to evaluate the proposed layout against the project’s room targets.
Coordinate the suspended layout
Review lighting distribution, detection, sprinklers, air movement and access with the responsible disciplines. Specify the suspension system and fixing design, including any project-specific load or seismic requirements. Agree cleaning and replacement access. A coordinated drawing prevents later removal of acoustic elements to accommodate services that were not included in the original layout.
