Perforated Acoustic Panels: Backing and Cavity Design

By Thermofriz Team · Updated 25 October 2026

Understand how perforation pattern, open area, backing and cavity affect the specification of acoustic wall and ceiling panels.

Identify the proposed face pattern

Record material, thickness, perforation or slot geometry, open area and finish. Two panels with similar appearance can use different hole arrangements. Compare the technical schedule and approved sample, then establish how the acoustic report identifies that construction. Avoid selecting solely from a broad claim that a panel is acoustic.

Coordinate the hidden layers

Review the backing, cavity depth and supporting system with the supplier. Keep required layers continuous around ordinary joints while detailing openings for services appropriately. Do not substitute a backing with a different construction just because its thickness appears similar. Where the assembly differs from the report, seek a documented technical assessment instead of assuming equal performance.

Resolve services and maintenance early

Coordinate sprinklers, lights, speakers, access doors and perimeter closures on the reflected ceiling or wall drawings. Removable panels should retain their backing when reinstalled. Specify compatible cleaning and finishing procedures so that perforations remain open. At handover, keep the as-built assembly information with spare-panel references for future replacement.
